Decided to move my ‘secret’ section for friends and family to a different subdomain. It’s private and I want to be able to post personal things like I would on my private social media and this seems like a good way to do it. I don’t like using Facebook and Instagram because I don’t trust their privacy policies or Meta in general tbh, so I just want to have my personal social media stuff on my own websites. If my friends and family want to check in on me, I’m only a couple clicks away. At least this way, I know all of my data, posts, and pictures are not being data harvested for advertising or whatever other purposes. It all belongs to me on my own domain.
.
Speaking of personal websites though, I wish making a site like this was a simple process for people who aren’t tech savvy. I don’t know, maybe myself and everyone else on the small web are just weirdos, but I can’t help but feel like if it were more convenient and simple to create a personal space online like this, while also being able to be easily connected to loved ones, I think a lot more people would explore it. Maybe. Maybe not. Another part of me feels like people hate change and they’re so used to using platforms like Facebook that they just wouldn’t bother with anything else, no matter how abusive Meta is or how much worse they become, people will continue to put up with it. These platforms have become horrible over the years, but the implement abusive policies and practices a little bit at a time like a boiling frog so people don’t notice until it’s so bad, but by that point it’s been so bad for so long that people no longer care.
.
Anyhow, I just hope to be an example, a point of exit if you will, to show people that you can create something great, and fun, and creative that’s wholly your own where you’re truly free online. And I hope the longer I am here and involved on the small web, I can introduce ways to people still on mainstream platforms and show them that you can still be just as connected to friends and family as you are on big tech centralized social media platforms, and making a website doesn’t have to be hard. I think that’s my greatest mission while I’m here.
