I like my job but sometimes there are things that are part of my responsibility that I feel are difficult to face. I try really hard to get along with everyone and I want to be thought of fondly by my co-workers, but I don’t know if I feel comfortable or want to carry the weight of the extra responsibility I’ve taken on with my current position. Originally, I was excited about being offered this position. I assumed it would be a promotion to what I was previously doing – it is a supervisor role. Except, there was no pay raise and A LOT of additional responsibilities given to me. If I’m honest, I’m really not happy that the promotion did not come with a pay raise. If you are promoted and are given a lot more responsibilities than you previously had, the right thing to do is to give that person you are promoting a pay raise to compensate for the additional responsibilities that they are taking on. I feel it is really wrong that this did not happen. I also feel like people who work in retail are extremely undervalued, more so than most industries. What’s sad is that this is not the first time I’ve been promoted and was not fairly compensated. I used to work at a clothing store years ago. I worked there for 5 years, and when one of the assistant managers left the store, one of the other assistant managers told me in secret I was going to be offered her position soon. When that time came and I was offered her position, I took it. I got all the responsibilities that assistant manager had, except, they didn’t give me the title, nor did they give me any pay raise. I talked to them about it and they tried to worm out of giving me one by saying that they’ve downgraded the role so it isn’t an assistant manager position anymore, but that didn’t negate the fact that I still gained all the same leadership responsibilities they had with no compensation for it. It kind of hurts that this keeps happening to me, that I am seen as someone who can handle additional responsibilities, but no one thinks I’m valuable enough to be compensated for taking on those additional responsibilities. It isn’t right. I still work really hard, because I want more opportunities, but I don’t want more responsibilities without being properly compensated. I am tired of being under valued by management and big corporations. Don’t promote me and put more on my plate if you’re not going to value that I’m taking on so much extra responsibility. I don’t work for free, I don’t volunteer my time and energy for nothing, and it does not benefit me any to have more added to my plate while working at the same price point I was before I got promoted.
.
Anyways, I think I’m going to try and get moved into a different department and get out of the supervisor role. I love my job, I love my coworkers, I love my managers, but, I just feel done being an undervalued worker and not being fairly compensated for additional responsibilities. I just feel so tired of being undervalued.
